How to study for your Midterm - 8 Purple/Silver

8 Purple/Silver
How to study for your Math Midterm (Chapters 1, 2, parts of 3 and 4)

*Review your chapter packets from Chapters 0-2.  Review your tests and re-do problems that look challenging.  Make sure you still remember how to solve ALL the problems.

*Review old quizzes and notes from Chapters 0-2.

*Do the online practice tests for Chapters 0-4 from the Glencoe website (http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078884861/student_view0/chapter0/).  Take each test as many times as you need to until you receive a passing score.  Make notes about the problems that are the most challenging.

*Read through all your notes and foldables you have written this year.

***Make your Reference Page.  You may use the front of a sheet of paper to write notes, sample problems, examples, etc.  Make sure you include notes or examples for the following topics:
  • Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide integers, decimals and fractions (Chapter 0 – look at your Rational Rules paper you received at the beginning of the year)
  • Evaluate expressions (order of operations, substitute values in for variables – Chapter 1)
  • Solve equations with one variable (multi-step and variables on both sides – Chapter 2)
  • Solve absolute value equations (chapter 2)
  • Graphing linear equations (parts of Chapters 3 and 4 – everything on your foldable!)
    • Slope formula – identify the slope of a line given a graph or given 2 points
    • Slope-intercept form – identify the parts and graph the line
    • Point-slope form – identify the parts and graph the lines

  • You will have a few short answer questions.  Be able to answer and explain questions like the following:
    • What is a solution to an equation? What does it mean that x= 3 is the solution to 3x-2 = 7?
    • What is m and what is b in slope-intercept form? What is an intercept?
    • When would you use point-slope form? When is it easier to use slope-intercept form?
    • What is a function?
    • Why are there 2 answers to an absolute value equation?

How to study for your Math Midterm (Chapters 1-6)

*Review your chapter packets from Chapters 1-6.  Review your tests and re-do problems that look challenging.  Make sure you still remember how to solve ALL the problems.

*Review old quizzes and notes from Chapters 1-5.

*Do the online practice tests for Chapters 0-5 from the Glencoe website (http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078884861/student_view0/chapter0/).

  • Evaluate expressions (order of operations/substitute values for letters)
  • Solve equations with one variable (multi-step/variables on both sides)
  • Graphing!!! (slope formula, slope-intercept form, point-slope form, standard form, parallel and perpendicular lines, be able to graph all forms and change between all forms)
  • Solve and graph inequalities in one variable (graphs are number lines).
  • Solve and graph absolute value inequalities.
  • Solve and graph compound inequalities in one variable (graphs are number lines).
  • Solve systems of equations using substitution, graphing, and elimination.
  • Solve and graph systems of inequalities (on graph paper with shading).

  • You will have a few short answer questions.  Be able to answer and explain questions like the following:
    • What is a solution to an equation?  What does it mean that x=3 is the solution to 3x-2=7?
    • What is m and what is b in slope-intercept form?  What is an intercept? When would you use point-slope form? When is it easier to use slope-intercept form?
    • Why is the graph of the solution to an inequality a shaded number line?  What does the graph represent?
    • Is 3 a solution to 2x-1>5?  Why or why not?
    • When would substitution be easier than elimination if you are solving a system of equations? Give an example.
    • Why is graphing not always the best way to solve a system of equations?
    • What does a solution to a system of linear inequalities look like?  What do the different sections represent?
